History of the Goalen Family
This site presents a brief history of the Goalen family. It includes a Goalen family tree and short biographical details for some members of the family.
The Goalen family tree is formed mainly from the descendents of Walter Goalen (born 1741) and now has a number of distinct branches. These are as follows:
- The Litherland Goalens[1], who are descendents of the six children of Thomas Goalen (born 1820).
- The Leith Goalens[2], who are descendents of the nine surviving children of James Goalen (born 1836).
- The descendents of the seven children[3] of George Kirk Goalen (born 1837). This branch includes the Saskatchewan Goalens[4], who are descendents of Thomas James Goalen who emigrated to Canada in 1904.
- The Deptford Goalens[5], who are descendents of James Goalen (born 1779), an uncle of Thomas, James and George Kirk who moved from Leith to Deptford in about 1806.
- The Woolwich Goalens[6], who are descended from James Goalen (born about 1807). This branch includes the Salt Lake City Goalens[7], who are descended from two of James’s grandchildren who emigrated from Woolwich, UK to Salt lake City at the end of the nineteenth century.
This is a photograph of James Goalen (born 1836) with his wife Elizabeth Goalen (née Hunter) sitting with their nine children. It was taken in about 1895 when the family was living at 161 Constitution Street, Leith. You can move your mouse over the image to reveal the names of the people in the photograph. Clicking on James, Elizabeth, Georgiana, Margaret and James Thomas will activate hyperlinks to their web pages.

This is a ‘Goalen World Atlas’. It is a Google Map of the world with red marker pins showing areas where Goalen family members had lived up until about 1910. If you click on these markers, you will see pop-up windows showing which branch of the family lived there. Press ‘Satellite’ to show an aerial photograph of the region. You can drag the map with your mouse and use the + and - buttons and the slider control to zoom in and out. The Goalen family was mainly from Scotland but there were two branches of the Goalen family tree in North America.
The Salt Lake City branch of the Goalen family tree is as follows:
- Walter Goalen (b. 1741) married Margaret Nimmo
- eldest son by Margaret Nimmo, James Goalen (b. 1779), who moved from Leith to Deptford
- James Goalen, Sawyer, Woolwich, UK, who married Maria Altus
- eldest son James Joseph Goalen (b. 1826), Woolwich, UK, who married Elizabeth Sanders
- son George William Goalen (b. 1855) who married Rosa Emmaline and emigrated to Salt Lake City, USA
- son Stanley Goalen (b. 1893)
- George William had a brother Walter Goalen (b. 15 Apr 1848), Engine Maker, Woolwich, Kent, UK, who also emigrated to Salt Lake City.
This is a larger scale Google Map showing Deptford and Woolwich in London, UK. Press ‘Satellite’ to view an aerial photograph of the region. The early 19th Century Goalens lived here before emigrating to Salt Lake City. There are markers for churches associated with Goalen families and, if you click on these, you will see pop-up windows explaining their significance.

There is a web link to this page from a discussion asking how family trees can be drawn using HTML. This example family tree shows how it can be done:

There is a link below to the Bravenet Guest Map service. A world map is held there for this site which is intended to show the geographic distribution of visitors to this site. You can place a pin on it to show where you live. But I have noticed that when other people set these up they get a few joke entries as well - like “help me, I'm drowning - I'm in the middle of the Atlantic!”:
